When we went to Inspired Living at Sarasota, we liked that it was not a hard sale pitch. We sat and had lunch together with the sales director, and we had conversations. We talked about our mother-in-law, and as we talked, she was telling us what the facility offered. They gave us the chance to taste the food that my mother-in-law would get. The chef had the place all set up in the room when we got there, then came in and introduced himself. Then we took a tour after that. I particularly appreciate the way they are set up, there’s a very large area outside that is secured where they can go in and out if they want to go outside, and it’s monitored. So if someone goes out, the staff is alerted so that they will check and make sure that they’re not out there too long, or get dehydrated or anything like that. It’s all memory care, but they have a variety of levels of memory care. So they’ve got to take care of those that are still very independent as well as those that are nearing the end of life. They have a good staff ratio. I appreciated that we got to meet some of the staff as we were walking around. We also talked with some of the patients as we were walking around, or people that live there, and it has a very homey feeling to it. The food was excellent, it’s fresh and made from scratch.

What’s really impressive about that particular facility is that they have this amazing filtration system that cleans the air. They’ve had zero incidence of COVID with the patients. They’re a five just for the attention and care that they gave to me and that I saw them give to the patients. They have a courtyard, but it’s much smaller than the other place.

I went to Arden Courts of Sarasota. I liked best that it was convenient. It seemed very clean and well put together. It was not as updated as some of the other facilities, and I really wanted something that was fresh and light. I didn’t care for it. The people were nice. It was kind of dark too, which was another reason. I really feel like these patients need to be in the sunshine, you know, in the open. They do have a beautiful courtyard.
I just didn’t feel like it was as nice as some of the other places, and it was expensive. It was really higher on the scale from the financial viewpoint. It’s really close to my house; it’s like two miles away. There’s a shopping center right down the street, a school, and restaurants all over the place.

The Poet’s Walk Sarasota is a wonderful community. It’s something that I had wanted. I have looked at others before, but this is such a wonderful place and the people here are great. Courtney, the executive director is wonderful. Kris too, I think she’s the relations person here. Those two are amazing people, especially Courtney. The staff here are good and they’re very helpful. The food here is great, and the facility is nice, clean, and bright.
They’ve got all kinds of activities for the residents every day, 7 days a week, and from morning to, I think, 7 p.m. with breaks in between them. I like that very much. I can’t say more about this place because I’ve seen others and this has been the best. Two days ago they had a pumpkin carving show, and it was beautiful. The day before yesterday they had a circus. I think it’s something to do with entertainment, which was great. They were doing a lot of performances in front of the residents and it was nice. They even had the whole place decorated so it feels like a circus and it’s entertaining.
This is supposed to be their pet week or something so a couple of times I saw them bringing in dogs. They go around and allow the residents to pet them and it’s amazing. The activities they have here are great. They also engage the residents in little craftworks and play with maybe balls and balloons and things like that.
My husband is in their memory care and I’ve been here a couple of days to visit and to keep my husband company. The bathrooms are clean, the beds are clean, and they have housekeeping almost every day. I see them coming to clean the floor and everything else in the bathroom. They take out the trash and everything. I can see that it’s a nice place.
The residents are actually like patients that live here. They are under the care of the doctors who were physicians of this facility so they arrange everything. They have a nurse who gives them the medication as required. You can find almost anything here like in-house physical therapy which they do if the residents wish to have therapy done. It’s very convenient and it can be arranged.
They have a barbershop or a salon for the residence if they want the hair done. They also have podiatry services, but these are outside people. If you need them to come here and do his hair or they need them to come to you and do his nails. I think they have a lot of stuff you can find here. The residents don’t have to go out, they can come to you.
The food is wonderful. I’ve eaten here before and they’re delicious. I think they have a chef and a different menu every day. My husband gets 24-hour care here too which is great. I couldn’t have done it alone or even with help at home. The service here is great.

SaraBella Senior Living was nice. It was brand new. At that time, they only had two ladies living in memory care. He’d be the only man there.
The rooms were very nice, but I did not feel it would be a good fit for my husband. The room size was quite large with a strange layout, but nice. The people there were nice. I don’t like the location. It was too far for me to go and too many miles to travel.
They didn’t have much planned for activities. They were just too new. When we were there to look at it, their activity was to take the two ladies on a bus to Mcdonald’s, and they got an ice cream cones.
The lady we met was very, very good. I ran into one person in the memory care. She was very quiet. She didn’t really say anything. They were nice.
One thing I complained about when I looked at the room was that they had carpet in the room. For somebody in memory care where they might have urine problems, the carpet will be soiled and smelly in a matter of weeks. She said if I would call her the next day telling her we were going to go there, they would rip it out and put in vinyl flooring. I said they really should have done that with all those bedrooms in memory care, especially in people with wheelchairs. It’s hard to maneuver. It was a plusher carpet in the bedroom. It didn’t make sense to me.

COVID-19 Rules for Memory Care in Sarasota
Since most COVID-19 rules for Memory Care Communities and other Senior Living Facilities are set at the state level, you can view the specific rules for your state on our Guide to Memory Care in Florida. Keep in mind that every community has specific policies that they put in place to protect their residents, so you should contact your local community for more information. Additionally, you can contact your local Area Agency on Aging to learn more – find contact information here.
What to Consider About Memory Care in Sarasota
In Florida, memory care facilities are overseen by The Long Term Care Services Unit, which is within the Division of Health Quality Assurance for The Agency for Health Care Administration. It is in charge of licensing, certifying and regulating various health care providers and long-term care providers, including memory care facilities and ensuring they comply with the laws and regulations.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Memory Care in Sarasota
- Sarasota enjoys a beautiful year-round climate, with 251 sunny days per year. It has hot humid summers and warm, dry winters. Summers can get uncomfortably hot on some days, but July typically has highs of 91°F. Winter is very pleasant, with it rarely going below 51°F, perfect for staying active out in the sun.
- The crime rate in Sarasota is relatively high. When it comes to violent crime, your chances of being a victim are 1 in 156 in Sarasota compared to 1 in 258 in Florida. For property crime, the chances are 1 in 33 compared to 1 in 56 across the state. Despite having higher than average crime rates, memory care facilities put measures in place to increase security, such as having securely gated communities with 24/7 surveillance.
- Sarasota has great health care facilities, including Sarasota Memorial Health Care, which has been recognized as one of the nation’s biggest and best hospitals. The hospital has also received a NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders), a special award for hospitals that implement special interventions and initiatives that promote excellent outcomes in senior citizens.
- Florida is one of the most tax-friendly states to live in for seniors, with no state income tax, meaning Social Security retirement benefits, incomes from both public and private pensions are all untaxed.
