Portland, a cultural and economic center of the Pacific Northwest, is located roughly 50 miles north of the state capital, Salem. The city is home to 652,503 residents, 12.8% of whom are seniors aged 65 and up. Home to some of the state’s top hospitals, a low crime rate and a thriving arts scene, Portland offers active seniors pleasant summers and countless entertainment opportunities.
Assisted living facilities support older adults who struggle to live on their own, offering hands-on assistance with daily living activities such as cleaning, transportation and personal care. Assisted living is ideal for seniors who don’t yet require the advanced level of care offered by nursing homes. Seniors living in Portland typically pay $4,975 per month for assisted living care, slightly less than Oregon’s statewide average of $5,045.
This guide covers the basics of assisted living in Portland. It includes more about the pros and cons of living in Portland, local resources available to support seniors and average monthly senior care costs.

However, it’s a little farther away from our support group, and also it seems a little bit too large for us (and for my friend primarily). Those are the main things we did not like.

I was really impressed with the cleanliness of Brookdale Oswego Springs Portland, and the attention from the staff. Demi gave the tour and she did a really great job explaining everything, and working with us to help us understand the process. Overall, it was a really great experience. She put me at ease and made me feel like my mom would be really well taken care of there. The menu looked really good. She talked about the food as well, and explained that she really enjoys it, and they really pride themselves on having really tasty food for the residents. I got an activity schedule, and I think they had a nice wide range of activities, and some good options for my mom. I would definitely recommend them for what we have experienced so far.

My mom is at Arcadia Senior Living and we chose this place for her because of the level of care that was offered and the availability to be able to administer that. The place is very clean and good with attention. Things are just a little slow right now because I think they have staffing issues, but I know that happens everywhere.
They have a nice big dining room area and many multipurpose rooms such as libraries, card rooms, and game rooms. They have exercise classes with small weights and things to help them with their balance. They also have a very good chef. All the meals are basically geared around a diabetic type style, so it’s very healthy dining. I actually tried their food a little bit, and it’s not bad at all. The staff is very polite and very attentive too. It’s a very nice facility.

From the family’s first impromptu visit to moving in day for our Dad, we have been thoroughly impressed with every aspect of care, compassion, and service at Hawthorne Gardens. Dad was amazed when he came from Rehab this week and was warmly welcomed by many members of the staff. (He said he couldn’t believe they all knew his name!)
Although we are new to this organization, we are confident that this will be a wonderful experience for our father. Leaving the apartment door open as we readied his room, it was comforting to hear staff work with residents and treat them with dignity and respect, and yes, humor. One needs to laugh whenever possible!
The facility is both inviting and clean, with many lovely nooks for relaxing or having a cup of coffee, or one of the many delicious snacks that greet residents daily. It truly has a homey vibe, and is tastefully decorated for the season. We chose a one bedroom apartment for Dad, and the flooring was redone to our specifications, as well as other changes that would provide him more security and comfort. The neighborhood view from his windows is free… and beautiful.
The meals have been critiqued favorably by Dad. If you knew my Dad, you would know that this is a big deal, so kudos to the culinary staff.
From reception to marketing and administration, caregivers to nursing and medical staff, housekeeping to maintenance, activity coordinator to "Dawn in the Salon," we thank you all and look forward to being part of your family.

My family member suffered in pain needlessly while Nursing staff made excuses and showed little regard to basic care. This place is a nightmare if you want quality care for your loved ones.

The staff are very kind, helpful and incredibly patient.
There is very little provided in the way of support for non Jewish residents, or any explanation of various rituals and commemorations, including any interpretation from Yiddish.
Food portions are generous, more than most residents can eat. Food waste is appalling–probably at least half of food served is thrown away.
Vegetables are routinely undercooked, rendering them inedible for those with few teeth or inability to chop them into small pieces.
Food served is nutritious and varied but often not prepared with elderly or chew-challenged residents in mind.
Smaller servings more appropriately cooked would no doubt be well appreciated and beneficial to resident health.
Waiting time for meals can be long; some soft background music would improve the atmosphere.
If there was a way for any resident who wished to share their stories (weekly flyer etc) camaraderie could be built, to everyone’s benefit.

More specifically, conversation about use and needing to purchase. All in all I enjoyed the facility and my grandmothers surroundings. They had a nice tennis court behind the facility which overlooked the river. It was pretty nice but me or my grandmother used it. I can’t comment about the cost of the facility due to my parents never discussing it, but, from the looks of it I wouldn’t be surprised if it was in the upwards of $3500 to 4500/month.

ElderPlace would do everything from medical, primary care, dental, vision, caring, etc. They take care of everything there. They even take care of transportation if they have to go outside of the facility for services. I was very impressed with them. It is part of the Providence Health Care System, and it is a very good system.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Portland
- Portland is part of the Pacific Northwest, a region notorious for steady rain and overcast skies. The city averages just 144 sunny days per year, significantly less than the U.S. average of 205 days. Seniors who love sunny skies might not enjoy living in Portland; otherwise, Portland summers are remarkably comfortable, earning a 9.4 on the BestPlaces Comfort Index, where a 10 is the best possible score.
- Cost-conscious seniors might not appreciate Portland’s high overall cost of living. Its overall cost of living is 30.8% higher than the national average and 17.7% higher than Oregon’s statewide average. Portland’s housing costs are 81.5% higher than the national average; on the bright side, seniors who live in assisted living communities won’t be responsible for separate housing costs. Another good thing about Portland’s cost of living is that the city’s health care costs are 14.1% lower than the U.S. average.
- On a scale of 1 to 100, with lower scores indicating less crime, Portland’s violent crime rate is 21.7, slightly lower than the U.S. average of 22.7. The city’s property crime rate of 72.3, however, is more than double the national average of 35.4. Assisted living facilities typically offer several strong security measures, keeping seniors safe.
- Seniors who appreciate art will love Portland’s bustling art scene, featuring dozens of annual art-related events and numerous art galleries. Portland hosts over 20 film festivals a year and three monthly art walks.
- Portland is home to four of Oregon’s top 10 hospitals. OHSU Hospital, the state’s top hospital, is nationally ranked in six specialties and five children’s specialties.
