Pittsburgh is home to 302,971 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau. Over 14% of those individuals are aged 65 or older, and some of these residents are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Fortunately, the rate of Alzheimer’s-related deaths in Pittsburgh decreased between 2014 and 2018. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2014, the city saw 570 Alzheimer’s-related deaths, while that number decreased to 506 in 2018, indicating a decline of 11.23%. This death rate decrease shows a positive trend when compared to Pittsburgh’s overall death rate increase of 2.47% during the same time period.
Despite Alzheimer’s-related deaths decreasing, Pittsburgh families still face the challenges of this disease and related disorders. Memory care communities in Pittsburgh can provide seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease the care and support they need. These facilities offer around-the-clock care that keeps seniors safe. In this guide, discover all the details about Pittsburgh’s memory care communities and local resources for seniors and their families.

Atria McCandless has been so instrumental in the care of my precious Mom, who has dementia. The community is clean, inviting, and well-appointed.
The Life Guidance (Memory Care) Director, Karen, is an absolute God-send. Truly my prayers were answered when this woman came into our lives. She provides me with on-going updates about Mom and goes above and beyond in her care of her. She texts/ calls immediately, even when she is not in the office; something I would not expect, but it is much appreciated. Once I was chatting with her on the phone while she happened to be at the store purchasing things for the residents, including my Mom. She and the LG staff have gotten to know my Mom’s abilities and tendencies and use this information to keep her safe, well-fed, and happy.
Chef Mark has been so helpful in helping to ensure that my Mom has meals that she enjoys eating and are healthy. Anytime I am visiting my Mom during meal time, the food smells delicious! He works with Karen and the staff to meet my Mom’s individual dietary needs. My Mom is tiny and needs to not lose/ gain weight and I am happy to hear that she eats several good meals and snacks each day.
The LG staff provides activities and events for their residents. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the fact that my Mom spends her days engaged and active. This is so important, especially for dementia patients. Since my Mom has become a resident, they have had a New Years party, Valentine party, St. Patrick’s Day party, and a Mother’s Day tea. Family was invited to the Mother’s Day tea and allowed us time with Mom while we enjoyed tea, finger sandwiches, and an assortment of desserts. These activities are not only good for Mom, but help us have create memories with her.
My Mom’s ability to communicate is limited at this point, but when I visit her and ask her if she is happy, she always answers me with a big YES. God bless Karen, the LG staff, and all of Atria McCandless.

Northland Heights Located in North Hill is fairly new. One thing about the place, it used to be a hotel at one time, and they’ve converted. It’s got all-new flooring. The walls were all painted. Everything looks very, very nice. I’ve seen some of the assisted living folks around on the first floor. They seem to be doing pretty well. In the memory care unit, we went up to and did a tour. They showed us the dining area. They have a little patio outside that people go to in nice weather. they have really nice rooms. They’re all furnished, so they have areas for activities. It’s a pretty nice place.
Mary is the one that gave us a tour, and she did a great job. I was impressed. Overall, it’s pretty nice. It’s really well done inside, and they got two levels of parking and stuff. So, that’s not too bad; It makes it easier.

My mom is now in the memory care unit. They are very attentive and very caring. She is in lock down because she was wandering. However, they do bring her downstairs and let her participate in the assisted living activities like bowling, bingo, and cards. Honestly, we are very happy with it. We have seen her meals, and they also get to eat what the assisted living patients are eating. For the first week she was there, I had probably called 4 or 5 times a day just to check on her, and the staff was very accommodating and very nice. I also had the executive director call me for the first week just to let me know how she was doing. They are absolutely wonderful. She has like a small apartment, but there is enough room for a bed, a night stand, a dresser, a comfortable chair, a TV stand, and a table. She also has a little kitchenette with a refrigerator and a microwave, and her own bathroom.

We were so grateful that we were familiar with the care that is provided by the compassionate staff at this facility. Because of our previous experience with them we wouldn’t have considered anywhere else. We knew that, although we could not visit because of COVID restrictions, he was being well cared for. He passed away recently, fortunately after visiting restrictions had been lifted. The staff not only took excellent care of him in his last days, but showed as much compassion to us as family members. We will never forget their kindness.

- Pittsburgh is home to several high-quality hospitals, including the top-rated UPMC. The hospital’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center is a state-of-the-art center, offering seniors outpatient evaluations and diagnostic assessments.
- Pittsburgh offers several public transportation options, including fixed route bus schedules and the Light Rail. Seniors aged 65 or older can show their Pennsylvania Senior Citizen ID card or SeniorConnect card to ride for free.
