Philadelphia Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Philadelphia:

Philadelphia Corporation for Aging

Address: 642 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130-3424
Phone Number: (215) 765-9000

The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging is a nonprofit organization that offers services to seniors, including home-delivered meals or meals provided at senior centers. Help is available for seniors in Philadelphia if shopping, cooking or affording food is a challenge. The meals can be tailored to be diabetic or heart-friendly diets, and kosher options are also available. Drivers are specially trained to interact and communicate regularly with individuals and to know when to report a change in their client’s status to service coordinators if needed.

Philadelphia Corporation for Aging – Caregiver Support

Address: 642 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130-3424
Phone Number: (215) 765-9000

For seniors who are the primary caregivers or sole custodians of their grandchildren, the PCA offers support with financial assistance for day care or summer camp, caregiver education and training and benefits counseling. The PCA also provides caregiver support to individuals who care for seniors aged 60 years and older. This service can include care management, financial assistance to reimburse services and medical supplies, adult day care for those who qualify and education and training.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 400 North Street, 4th Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17120-0225
Phone Number: 1 (866) 466-3972

Pennsylvania offers weatherization services to low-income individuals, with a priority on higher risk residents such as the elderly or disabled. A home audit will help assess conditions and identify cost-efficient energy-saving measures. These can include minor repairs, heating or cooling system modifications or insulation installation.

Philadelphia Department of Revenue

Address: City Hall, Office 215, Philadelphia, PA 19107
Phone Number: (216) 686-2181

Philadelphia’s Department of Revenue offers assistance and discounts to qualifying seniors. Upon meeting certain criteria, the Water Revenue Department can offer a 25% discount on water and sewer bills to qualifying seniors. The Dept. of Revenue can also offer to stabilize and “freeze” increases on real estate taxes for older individuals of a certain income requirement. Additional services include a real estate tax deferral program and eviction assistance.

Basic Systems Repair Program

Address: City Hall, Office 215, Philadelphia, PA 19107
Phone Number: (216) 686-2181

Philadelphia’s Basic Systems Repair Program (BSRP) is funded by the Division of Housing and Community Development of the state of Pennsylvania. The BSRP offers free repairs to owner-occupied homes, which include plumbing, heating and roofing. To qualify, a household must meet certain income requirements per person in the home.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
