Seniors in Indianapolis pay an average of $4,478 per month for assisted living care, which is about 4.5% higher than Indiana’s $4,283.
This guide includes details about the local recourses available to seniors and the average cost of assisted living. It also offers insight into the advantages and challenges of retiring in the Indianapolis area.

I went to Greenbriar Village. I would give it a 10 out of a 10. It was an excellent facility. The admission director was excellent explaining everything, explaining the costs, and explaining what they offer. It was excellent. The rooms were very roomy and very clean. They’re very willing to move furniture around to best suit my brother. If I wanted to bring in something that is his, that would be fine. The other thing that was good about this place is that they did have a room available. They just have two rooms for respite care. They are both excellent apartments, not just little rooms. It is an apartment with a small fridge and microwave. You don’t have to give 30-day notice. I don’t know how much time he’s going to need in a place, and so I don’t know how to give a 30-day notice. I don’t have to at Greenbriar. I can say, ‘Hey, he is ready to go home. Tomorrow discharge him, and he can go home.’ That was an excellent ability with them.
The dining area was very nice. It was spread out so they could have some social distancing. If you wanted to be served in your room, they would bring it to your room. They do laundry just one room at a time. They do the laundry and bring it right back to the room. It was nice because I have back issues, and I don’t want to be dragging big bags of clothes home, lift them into the trunk, and so on. It was a very nice feature. They choose their menu, whatever they want each meal; that was very good. They have a therapy room that my brother would go to, and not just do a few exercises in his room. They have therapy on site; whereas the other facility, they would have a visiting therapy come in.

I went to look at Oasis at 56th. The staff was nice and friendly. She gave me a tour of the area. They were not able to accommodate my mother, mostly because she is on a special diet. She’s on puree food, and they said they would not be able to do that. Plus, it’s all assisted living; she’s not a good candidate for assisted living. The lady that I talked to was very helpful and nice. She showed me the open units, and they were very clean. It would be a place that I would like my mother to be if they could accommodate her. That’s all that they have there. They don’t even have a memory unit.
It looked like they had bingo, puzzles, and reading. It was kind of around lunchtime, so people were getting ready for their afternoon meal. The food smelled good, but I didn’t eat. The grounds were clean. From one of the rooms there, I could look out the window, and the staff said that is where the residents can walk if they want to. Oasis at 56th was the largest facility that I saw. The staff seemed to be friendly enough. I didn’t meet a whole lot, but some of the nurses and people were friendly to me.

We just pulled my mother out of anthology.
When she moved in 3 years ago, it was called stonecrest and under different management.
Our goal was to transition from AL to memory care when the time came. Unfortunately, stonecrest and all of their management are no longer. Anthology has taken a once incredible facility and driven it into the ground. The current executive director does not care about the residents and what is best for them. He does not care about his staff or have their back. The core values that we fell in love with at stonecrest have not been carried on. Don’t be fooled by the beautiful building and ‘amenities’ The care there is minimal. They are grossly understaffed and the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing = zero communication. It is such a shame what happened there. Complaints are ignored so nothing gets accomplished. Of all original residents of stonecrest, one family is yet to move their loved one out. That alone speaks volumes!

We went to the Wyndmoor of Castleton today. I liked it, I think my mother liked it. Laurie, the assistant director, was a very, very lovely lady. She was very thorough, gave us the tour. She introduced us to other residents there, and everybody that we met seemed to be really, really lovely people and happy. The staff seemed very, very nice, very informative, and they were very good. We saw a studio, this one lady was in her studio, and she allowed us to come in. Her studio was lovely, very, very nice. They showed us two other studios, one was being renovated, it looked nice, the other one had just been emptied. One of them didn’t have any carpet, which is OK, we can always get throw rugs, and the other one, they’re putting carpet down. They didn’t have it down at the time, but they’re putting it down. So they’re getting two apartments ready for someone. They were very nice. We saw the exercise room and a physical therapy room. They’re very well equipped. They have a beauty salon there, it looks really nice, and a nice laundry room.

Five Star Residences of Banta Pointe was a small place. They had a lot of the things that I needed at this point. I liked the two-bedroom apartments. They were nice, big, cozy, and had a garage. They had a nurse, health care services, and a gym. The staff was very nice and friendly. They gave me a gift, some cookies, to take home, too. I saw that they care for their elderly. I felt comfortable there and I enjoyed the tour.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Indianapolis

The department also manages state licensing and federal certification programs, and its representatives perform routine inspections to ensure that the facilities comply with Indiana’s regulations.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Indianapolis
- Indianapolis residents enjoy four distinct seasons with generally pleasant winters and summers. The area’s average precipitation levels also appeal to active individuals who appreciate outdoor activities. Although January typically produces more than 6 inches of snow, and July’s humidity can be draining, Indianapolis’s overall weather index of 8.6 indicates a comfortable year-round climate.
- While Indianapolis’ senior residents only account for 12.2% of the city’s total population, the area’s 272 physicians per 100,000 population is well above the national norm of 210 per 100,000. Individuals in this demographic also benefit from health care costs that are 13.5% lower than the United States’ average. The city’s health rating falters, with low water and air quality ratings; however, the city’s participation in the EPA’s Superfund program indicates a focused effort to clean up areas that may cause health risks.
- As with most large cities, Indianapolis has a problem with property and violent crime. However, seniors who decide to live in an assisted living community typically enjoy 24/7 security features, such as video surveillance.
- The low cost of living in Indianapolis helps seniors afford a comfortable retirement. The city’s grocery and housing costs are only marginally higher than the state’s. However, its 93.6 index for groceries is 6.4% lower than the nation’s, and its housing costs rest at 38% below the U.S. average. The region’s winter and summer temperatures require consistent and reliable utilities, and this is one area in which seniors, and all residents, can benefit. Indianapolis’ rates are 7.2% below the state’s and 9.8% less than the national average.
- Indianapolis is home to several large employers, including Lilly, an Amazon fulfillment center, IUPUI and a thriving farm-to-table restaurant culture and convention and hospitality industry. Each contributed to the area’s recent 2.5% job market increase. They also factor into Indianapolis’ 37.5% predicted future job growth, which is 11% higher than the U.S.’s 33.5%. A strong economy supports necessary senior resources.
