The birthplace of Coca-Cola and home to CNN, Atlanta is Georgia’s largest city, with a population nudging toward half a million. The 65 and older age group makes up around 11.5%. In 2014, Atlanta joined the AARP Age-Friendly Network, pledging to develop senior-friendly policies that create a safer environment with more opportunities for older residents. The city also boasts great shopping malls, particularly in Buckhead, as well as restaurants serving local and international cuisine and world-class museums.
Seniors in Atlanta are well-served by the city’s assisted living facilities. They provide high levels of care for people who need assistance with everyday tasks, such as personal grooming, in addition to clean and comfortable living spaces and opportunities to socialize with other residents. According to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the typical fee in Atlanta is $3,845 per month, which is more than the state average but significantly below normal for the country, which has a median of $4,500.
This guide considers the benefits and drawbacks of living in Atlanta and the expected costs for different types of senior care in the city. It also includes some useful resources for seniors considering assisted living.

The bedrooms and bathrooms were tiny. What I did not like is that you have to get in an elevator to go up to what is considered the first floor of residences. I was looking for a place for my mom where she could get a ground-floor room. It is pet-friendly, which is great. But it’s not a great facility for a dog. The person showing me around said that most of the people there had cats.

I went to see Orion Star Personal Care Home assisted living. As I drove up, I just didn’t feel like the property was being kept up. It was very dated. It just seemed like there was no money going back into the upkeep and stuff of the property itself.
The apartments were very, very tiny. A twin-size bed is pretty much going to fill up the room then the resident doesn’t have a whole lot of room left for any other personal items. It was just very bleak.
They don’t have amenities, it’s a personal care home so they don’t have any. There was just one room that had a TV and I didn’t know if they had arts and crafts or anything. They just don’t have the amenities that a larger facility has. No activities were going on, either. I felt as though someone had brought those people there, dropped them off, and forgot about them.

Wesley Woods Towers was my mother’s first choice way back when. They ended up opening after COVID for a long time so she was able to take a tour inside of the rooms and picked a room right out. She is loving it. The staff or employees are very helpful to her, they had her stuff tacked onto the walls, they fixed her stove because it wasn’t working before she moved in. She enjoys them and she’s got a lot of places to walk now because she likes to go for a walk. There’s a lot of woods and big trees there, it’s a beautiful place. The towers around also are interesting, like the room is an interesting set up. Right now they’re eating in their rooms, but they have an elevator out and eventually they will have dining, but everybody will be separated because of COVID. They’ll only have two people to a table. She was upset by everything else anymore and complaining, but now I don’t hear from her much, which is great. The food is not organic, but it’s so much better than the place she was at. The staff and employees for her, as far as I know, it’s not perfect because of the way the front desk can be sometimes. She’s an interesting character and very by the book, but the lady who showed us the rooms are terrific and the maintenance people are very nice. She’s not very social, but she goes down to hear the guys play the piano outside, she goes to their exercises, they have devotionals, they also have a walking club. They’re not doing many activities because of COVID, but once this is over they’ll have a lot more stuff even. Everything else was a virtual tour, but once my mom saw the rooms and saw how people were acting she said she wanted it. Being actually able to go inside with a mask on was a game changer for everything, and they gave us lunch, and my mom was really into the shrimp salad.

COVID-19 Rules for Assisted Living in Atlanta
Since most COVID-19 rules for Assisted Living Communities and other Senior Living Facilities are set at the state level, you can view the specific rules for your state on our Guide to Assisted Living in Georgia. Keep in mind that every community has specific policies that they put in place to protect their residents, so you should contact your local community for more information. Additionally, you can contact your local Area Agency on Aging to learn more – find contact information here.
What to Consider About Assisted Living in Atlanta
Healthcare Facility Regulation is a branch of the Department of Community Health responsible for licensing and regulating assisted living facilities throughout Georgia. The division has a wide remit which includes investigating the legal and financial suitability of applicants and continual monitoring of their services after granting a license. It also frequently conducts unannounced inspections and revokes licenses from underperforming facilities.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Atlanta
- Atlanta has some of the best-performing hospitals in the country. Emory University Hospital specializes in cardiac care, oncology and transplantation. Emory St. Joseph Hospital has a great reputation for its heart and vascular and orthopedics work, and the city is also home to a significant number of Medicare-registered physicians.
- Major cities tend to attract more criminals, particularly if, like Atlanta, they’re popular with tourists. Consequently, the city has significantly higher rates of property and violent crime than normal for Georgia. However, it’s mostly concentrated in certain areas, such as downtown and some northwest neighborhoods. Generally speaking, the east side of the city has less crime. Seniors concerned by the statistics may want to know assisted living facilities typically include security systems and have staff on-site 24/7.
- Atlanta has a relatively stable climate, with temperatures hovering around 33 degrees in January, rising to a comfortable 88 degrees in July. The city gets 12 more sunny days annually than the U.S. average of 205, and there’s some kind of precipitation on about 109 days. Rainfall is significantly higher than normal, contributing to the abundance of trees and flora in the city and the richly green landscape enveloping it.
- Sperling’s BestPlaces’ cost of living index for Atlanta is 107.5, which is above the state and national indices. It appears that housing and transportation costs are the biggest contributors, but the former isn’t likely to concern seniors in assisted living too much. Not all costs are higher, though, as the table shows healthcare in Atlanta to be significantly more affordable than normal for Georgia and the United States.
- MARTA Mobility is a transportation service for frail seniors operated by Atlanta’s transport authority. All of its rail cars, stations and buses are suitable for people with disabilities. MARTA trains eligible cardholders how to use its trains and bus services, including ride-share solutions and charges $4 per one-way trip anywhere within the counties of Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton.
Paying for Assisted Living in Atlanta
The results of the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey show the typical senior in Atlanta pays approximately $3,845 per month for assisted living. This is $310 more than normal for Georgia, although significantly below the U.S. average of $4,500.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
Despite having higher costs than average for the state, Georgia doesn’t have the highest fees in the region. Less than 80 minutes northeast of the city, in Athens, seniors typically pay $4,184 to their assisted living providers. Gainesville is as expensive, at $3,893, but it’s still more costly than Atlanta. Seniors looking for more affordable care may want to consider relocating to Macon, which has the most affordable fees in the state, at $2,860 per month.
The Costs of Other Types of Senior Care
Assisted living costs in Atlanta are an attractive alternative to homemaker services, at $4,290, and home health aide support, at $4,576, because the senior still has home maintenance costs after paying for their care. Nursing homes also provide accommodation, but their fees are much higher, typically $7,528 for a semiprivate room and another $1,065 per month for a private one. Only adult day care centers cost less than assisted living, with average fees of $1,327.

Atlanta’s older residents can benefit from a wide range of resources aimed at making their lives more comfortable. The programs in this list are only a taste of what the city provides. The Georgia Department of Veterans Services supports and advocates for U.S. military veterans and their dependents. Its officers can assist and advise vets on the state and federal benefits to which they're entitled and help with accessing military benefits specific to long-term care, such as Aid and Attendance. The department can also support healthcare needs by referring veterans to counselors who specialize in psychological conditions common among those who served, such as PTSD.
Fulton County Senior Services operates many resources for the area's older residents. Although many of its supports focus on helping seniors age at home, some are available to all. It administers several senior centers, which provide safe spaces for older adults to congregate and participate in a range of physically and mentally stimulating activities. The centers also include educational classes and facilities aimed at enhancing well-being, such as therapeutic pools.
The Long-Term Care Ombudsman is a program funded by the state to help seniors in residential care facilities. Ombudsmen are volunteers who regularly visit facilities to engage confidentially with residents and support them if they have issues about the quality of their care. The ombudsman can also provide copies of inspection reports for people looking for the ideal assisted living community in Atlanta.
Managed locally on behalf of the nonprofit ALS Association, the medical equipment loan closet provides gently used devices to seniors with mobility restrictions. Subject to availability, it can supply a wide range of equipment to help seniors get around easier, such as powered wheelchairs, rollators, canes and transport chairs. It also loans equipment for use in the home, including bedside commodes and bath benches.
